Why an Organized Space Matters (and How to Get There)

An organized space isn’t just visually pleasing; it improves mood, boosts productivity, and reduces stress. When everything has a place, we feel more relaxed and in control, and we can enjoy our spaces without clutter distracting us. Here’s a simple, effective approach to organizing any room.
1. Start with an Empty Room
The best way to tackle an organized room is to start from scratch. Remove every single item from the room, from furniture to decor, leaving the space empty. This step lets you see the room for what it is...an area free from clutter so you can start fresh. Once emptied, give the room a thorough cleaning - vacuuming, dusting, and wiping down surfaces. Starting with a spotless canvas makes it much easier to make intentional choices about what to bring back.
2. Bring in Only What You Need
Begin by putting back only the essentials for the room’s function. This is where storage options become crucial. Use shelves, cabinets, or bins to give each essential item a designated home. Storage isn’t just about hiding things away; it’s about creating intentional places for the items you actually need; 'everything has a home'. This step helps define the space’s purpose, keeping it uncluttered and functional.
3. Add a Few Personal Touches
To make the room feel inviting and reflect your personality, choose 5-10 favorite decor items that bring comfort or inspiration. These could be cozy blankets, art pieces, or family photos - just make sure each has a specific place. Minimal clutter is essential with this step; too many items can quickly overwhelm, so select pieces that truly spark joy and add value to the room without adding chaos.
4. Sort the Remaining Items
Now it’s time to face the pile of everything else! Go through each item and decide whether to keep, sell, donate, recycle or trash it.
Keep: All the 'keepers' must have a designated space, either on display or in storage.
Sell: Create a clear plan: set a date for a garage sale or list them on online platforms like Facebook Marketplace. Having a deadline prevents a “sell” pile from becoming its own clutter.
Donate / Recycle / Trash: Bag any items and dispose of them right away to avoid second-guessing. If parting with certain belongings feels difficult, put those items out of sight for a year. After a year, reflect on whether you missed or needed them. If not, it’s easier to let them go - if you want to remember them, take a photo instead.
Repeat for Each Room
If you are tackling more than one space, taking it room by room helps to prevent becoming overwhelmed and lets you see progress as each space transforms.
Organizing isn’t just about being neat and tidy; it’s about creating an area that supports and uplifts you. By integrating intention, you’ll end up with a space that feels balanced, personalized, and functional.
An organized space helps create an organized mind!
